Beautiful Austin –
Following an announcement related to Moxy’s arrival in the Middle East, Marriott International’s contemporary brand is expected to open a Hong Kong-designed 158-key hotel in Austin, Texas.
The hotel is located at the western end of the University of Texas campus. The project is prominently located on an rejected corner lot along Guadalupe Street, dubbed “the Drag” by the locals, and is an important part of the revitalization of the area. The volumetry is based on the external order of arrival-both for vehicles and pedestrians- and reflects the efficient internal programming. The materials are selected based on the local vernacular of the hills, with masonry and reclaimed wood cladding the common areas on the ground floor, while metal panels made of weatherproof steel envelop the levels of the rooms above. Masonry and wood provide a tactile experience at the bottom, resist abrasion and mis word expected in heavy traffic, and are representative of the use in the community on the ground floor. The above-mentioned metal plates provide a natural and constantly changing quality. Weatherproof steel changes over time, a symbol of travelers coming and going to the hotel, and evolves in the way they experience the building from the beginning of the stay to the end.
